******No one is better equipped in the struggle for wealth and worldly success than
the alluring and ruthless Becky Sharp, who defies her impoverished background to
clamber up the class ladder. Her sentimental companion amelia, however, longs only
for caddish soldier George. As the two heroines make their way through the tawdry
glamour of Regency society, battles - military and domestic - are fought, fortunes
made and lost. The one steadfast and honourable figure in this corrupt world is
Dobbin with his devotion to Amelia, bringing pathos and depth to Thackeray's
gloriously satirical epic of love and social adventure.

******Imogen Stubbs, Anna Massey, Adrian Lukis and Christopher Cazenove
star in this compelling portrait of the complex and passionate woman behind
the crown, as heard on BBC Radio 4.
Queen Victoria reigned for 63 years--the longest reign of any British monarch.
During those years she was transformed from a shy young bride to the formidable
"Mother of Europe", making her mark on the 19th century in a manner that will never be forgotten.
Yet beneath the formal façade lay a passionate, principled and highly individual woman
who found relief from the many frustrations of government in prolific writing. As the carefully
preserved pages of her diaries and letters turn and reveal their secrets, the real Victoria emerges.
Imogen Stubbs plays the young Victoria, reading those diary extracts which chart the early years
of her reign, from the time she ascended the throne as an 18-year-old until the premature death
of her beloved Albert. These contemporary accounts mingle with dramatised episodes featuring
the characters closest to the woman, giving overall a fascinating insight into the mind of one of
Britain's most celebrated rulers.

A Child in the Forest 10.10 - Poll Says
******'Few people visited the Forest of Dean. They thought us primitive, and looked
down on us.' Winifred Foley grew up in the 1920s, a bright, determined miner's
daughter in a world of unspoilt beauty and desperate hardship, in which women
were widowed at thirty and children died of starvation. Living hand-to-mouth in a
tumbledown cottage in the Forest of Dean, Foley - 'our Poll' - had a loving family
and the woods and streams of a forest 'better than heaven' as a playground. But a
brother and sister were dead in infancy, bread had to be begged from kindly neighbours
and she never had a new pair of shoes or a shop-bought doll. And most terrible of all,
like her sister before her, at fourteen little Poll had to leave her beloved forest for the city,
bound for a life in service among London's grey terraces.

Legacy 2.2 by David Bishop
******Following the death of their parents, twins Jules and Harry were brought up
by their grandmother Rose. Remote and eccentric, it is not until after Rose's death
that Jules and Harry begin to discover who she really was and what she did in the war.
After finding clues to the whereabouts of the legacy in Rose's attic, Harry sets off for the
City of London. Harry thinks he's heading for a security vault but finds himself trapped in
an underground complex of bunkers. Rose it emerges worked for the secret services during
the war and helped to develop The Legacy Project - a secret weapon built to disrupt and
defeat the Nazis in the event of them being able to occupy London. The weapon, hidden
underground, was designed to destroy the centre of London with other weapons being
replicated in major cities throughout Britain. It should have been deactivated after the war
but was kept secretly in commission for use during the Cold War.
Rose believed it should have been destroyed and had a life-long goal to de-activate it. But she
ran out of time. Now Harry and Jules have been left the challenge but they are not the only people
trying to find the Legacy Project, and not everyone has peaceful intentions.
Translations by Brian Friel
*******A new production of Brian Friel's masterpiece about
language and power.
It's the summer of 1833. In a hedge-school in Donegal, the
schoolmaster's prodigal son is about to return from Dublin.
With him are two army officers. Their aim is to create a map
of the area, and, in the process, replace the Irish place-names
with English equivalents. It's an act with unexpected and
violent consequences.
Thirty years ago playwright Brian Friel and actor Stephen Rea
founded the Field Day Theatre Company in Northern Ireland.
A company that aimed to provide a 'fifth province' in which Ireland's
political and social troubles could be explored and re-imagined.
Translations was its first production and became an instant classic.
To mark its anniversary, BBC Radio 4 has commissioned a new
production, specially adapted for radio by Michael Duke.
