Frank Muir Goes Into...

1971 - 1972 Frank Muir Goes Into... starring & written by Frank Muir co-starring Alfred Marks produced by Simon Brett. Frank was asked by BBC to compile a Christmas program for Children, tracing the development of radio comedy since the war years. Material was sourced from BBC's considerable radio archive. The program was called "Why Are You Laughing?" and was produced by David Hatch and Simon Brett. The show had potential for a series. The show became Frank Muir Goes Into... and each week looked at a different theme; sport, home, the workplace etc. Alfred Marks joined the show as a general purpose joke teller, actor and fine reader of poetry. Marks also had a great ear for accents and could produce anything from cockney doggerel to Dr Johnson's fine Lichfield accent. One time, Alfred Marks was reading some verse when Simon Brett decided the accent needed adjustment. "I'd like it a bit nearer Streatham than Bermondsey," he advised. Marks hit his mark! To illustrate the point in comic fashion Frank played clips of many comics of the day including Bob Newhart, Bill Cosby, Woody Allen, Shelly Berman, Tony Hancock, John Cleese, Mike Nichols and Elaine May, Peter Sellers, Kenneth Williams, Peter Cooke, Dudley Moore, Ronnie Barker, Ronnie Corbet and many others. They also quote from many dramatists and philosophers on the subject of the day. This is a very funny series.
